What a column retrofit does to a Mandarin kitchen
A column dropped into an opening cut for something shallower will work perfectly for years and then lose ground in August. The cabinet is the fault, not the compressor.
Most of Mandarin was built between the 1970s and the 1990s, with the riverfront stretch along Mandarin Road older again. None of those kitchens were designed around full-height refrigeration columns, built-in coffee machines or professional rangetops, because none of those categories were in an ordinary American kitchen at the time.
So the modern appliances arrived later, into cabinetry that already existed. That is a retrofit, and it is the single most useful thing to know about servicing appliances in this neighbourhood.
The three measurements that get lost
A retrofit almost always preserves the visible dimensions and quietly loses the invisible ones.
The first is the ventilation opening. Refrigeration columns reject their heat through a grille, and the manual specifies a clear area in front of it and a gap behind the cabinet. A custom panel made to match existing doors, a toe kick rebuilt to line up with the run, or a filler strip added to close a gap will all reduce that opening without changing anything anyone can see.
The second is depth. Older base and tall cabinets were often built shallower than today’s standard, so a column that is nominally the right size sits proud of the run. The usual remedy is to push it back until it meets the wall, which closes the rear air gap entirely.
The third is the cutout for a wall oven, which is the one that catches people on replacement day. A new oven that is nominally the same width can still foul a face frame by half an inch, and half an inch on a scribed face frame is a joinery job, not an appliance job.
What the symptoms look like later
Nothing fails on installation day. The appliance has enough margin to cope with a mild spring, and the household concludes the fit was fine.
The bill arrives in August. A Mandarin kitchen with afternoon sun can sit at eighty-two degrees for hours, and a condenser that is already breathing through a restricted opening has no margin left. Run time climbs, the fresh food compartment drifts up two or three degrees, and the appliance becomes audible in a room where it used to be silent.
The same physics applies under a cooktop. Induction generator boards depend on a fan pulling room air through the cabinet, and a drawer box fitted below the cooktop closes that path. The cooktop protects itself by reducing power, then dropping a zone, then shutting down, and it does this on long high-power cooking and never on a quick boil.
Why we measure the cabinet before quoting a part
A sealed system repair and a joinery correction are separated by an order of magnitude in price, and the symptoms overlap completely. So on any retrofit installation we check the grille clearance, the rear gap and the temperature of the air leaving the condenser before we open a refrigerant circuit.
Where the cabinet is the limiting factor we say so, in writing, with the measurements attached. Sometimes the fix is cutting a proper grille into a toe kick. Sometimes it is removing a drawer box. Occasionally it is genuinely a compressor, and then at least the new one is going into an opening that will let it live.

The best time to solve this is before the appliance arrives. If a kitchen is being updated, get the installation manual for the specific model and hand the clearance page to whoever is building the cabinetry. It is one sheet of paper and it prevents the most expensive class of call we take in this part of Jacksonville.
