Thermador repair

Thermador induction zones that cut out mid-cook, Mandarin

Induction zones that cut out, gas burners that will not simmer, and touch controls that stop responding once the cabinet below gets warm.

Cooktops are shallow appliances with a lot going on underneath, and in this neighbourhood the thing underneath them is usually a drawer that was never supposed to be there. That single detail explains a large share of the induction faults we are called to.

Induction and heat

An induction cooktop is a power electronics box with a glass lid. The generator boards under each zone make heat of their own, and the appliance relies on a fan pulling room air through the cabinet to carry it away. The installation manual asks for a specific open area below and behind, and it is not decoration.

When the boards get too warm the cooktop protects itself. It reduces power first, then drops a zone, then shuts down entirely, and it usually does this at the worst moment, which is twenty minutes into cooking with a full pan on a high setting. Owners describe it as random. It is not random at all, and the tell is that it happens on long high-power cooking and never on a quick boil.

Mandarin kitchens make this common. Most of the housing here dates from the 1970s through the 1990s, and cooktops arrived later as a retrofit, dropped into a counter above a base cabinet that already had drawers in it. A drawer box under an induction cooktop closes off the airflow path the fan depends on. So does a stack of pans set into the cabinet, and so does a spice drawer insert fitted by a joiner who had no reason to know.

We check the temperature of the air leaving the fan before we quote a generator board. Where the cabinet is the fault we say so, because a new board in the same cabinet will fail the same way.

Pan detection

A cooktop that says it cannot find the pan is often telling the truth. Pans lose their magnetic base over time, particularly clad bases that have warped away from the glass in the middle. Before anything else, put a fridge magnet in the centre of the pan base and see whether it grips hard. If it does not, the appliance is right.

Where the pan is fine and the zone still refuses, the fault is in the coil or its driver, and that is a real repair with a real part.

Touch controls

Capacitive controls sit under the same glass as everything else and are affected by heat and by moisture. Controls that work cold and stop working after half an hour of cooking are a heat problem, which brings us back to the cabinet. Controls that stop working after a spill are usually a cleaning issue, and controls that never worked from cold are a control board.

Gas and electric cooktops

Gas cooktops fail the way gas burners always fail. Continuous clicking on one burner points at that burner’s electrode or a soaked cap; clicking on all of them at once points at the spark module. A burner that will not hold a low simmer is often a gas supply problem rather than a burner problem, and we measure pressure at the appliance before touching an orifice.

Radiant electric cooktops are simpler again. A zone that will not heat is a element, its relay, or the control that drives the relay, and those separate quickly with a meter.

Cracked glass

Glass is not repairable and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is tell you honestly whether a replacement surface is available for your model and what it costs against the value of the appliance, so the decision is yours with real numbers in front of you.

Every visit carries the same flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair when you approve it, with ninety days on our labour and three hundred and sixty-five days on any part we install.

Symptoms we see on this one

  • Induction zone shuts off part way through cooking
  • One surface burner or zone will not heat while the rest do
  • Cooktop reports that it cannot detect the pan
  • Touch controls respond slowly or not at all
  • Cooling fan runs loudly or runs long after cooking
  • One gas burner clicks continuously while the others light
  • Cracked or chipped glass surface

A flat $80 covers the visit and the diagnosis. It is credited toward the repair when you approve the work.

Ninety days on our labour, three hundred and sixty-five days on the parts we install.

Before the estimate

What does a cooktop repair cost here?

The visit is a flat $80 and it comes off the repair once you approve it. What the repair itself lands at depends on the part, and these are the bands the work below has actually fallen into. A band is not a quote: the firm figure is written down after the appliance has been opened and measured.

The bands this page is about, parts and labour together.
Repair Typical range
Diagnostic visit $80 flat, credited
Igniter, spark module or surface element $210–$530
Control board or touch panel $430–$1,100
Door hinge, glass or seal $200–$650

These are the bands that fit this page. The whole table sets out every one of them, alongside how the diagnostic and the estimate work.

Asked on this appliance

What do owners ask about a cooktop?

Why does my induction cooktop shut a zone off part way through cooking?
Almost always heat, not electronics. The generator boards under each zone need room air pulled through the cabinet, and a drawer box or a stack of pans below closes that path. The cooktop reduces power, drops the zone, then shuts down, and it does it on long high-power cooking.
The cooktop says it cannot detect the pan. Is that a fault?
Often the appliance is right. Put a fridge magnet flat in the centre of the pan base: if it does not grip hard, the pan has lost its magnetic base and no repair will change that. Where the pan is sound and the zone still refuses, the coil or its driver is the repair.
What does it cost to fix one burner or zone that will not heat?
A surface element, an igniter or the spark module behind it sits at $210–$530. A touch control or the board under it sits at $430–$1,100. A single dead zone points at both of those until it is measured, which is what the diagnostic visit settles before anything is quoted.
Can cracked cooktop glass be repaired?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is find out whether a replacement surface is still made for your model, price it against the band table above, and give you both numbers so the decision is yours rather than ours.

The line we work to

Where the work stops

We work on the built-in appliances inside the kitchen and nothing else. The only duct we open is the one above the cooking surface, from the hood to the wall cap outside — the supply and return ducts that heat and cool the house are a different trade altogether and we are not in it. If the call is about a furnace, an air conditioner, an air handler or a vent in the ceiling, we will say so on the phone and send you elsewhere rather than book a visit.

A call from Mandarin about a Thermador appliance is ours. A call from Mandarin about the furnace, the air conditioning or a vent in the ceiling is not, and we would rather tell you that in thirty seconds on (904) 201-3304 than on your doorstep.
