Panel-ready installations hide the grille

Suite kitchens in these communities are frequently panel-ready, with custom cabinet fronts fitted to the refrigeration column, the dishwasher and the wine unit so that the run reads as joinery. It looks excellent and it introduces one specific hazard.

A refrigeration column rejects its heat through a grille, and the manual asks for a defined clear area in front of it. A custom panel or a matching toe kick built proud of that grille reduces the opening without anybody realising, and the appliance never complains until a Jacksonville August. Then the condenser cannot shed heat quickly enough, the compressor runs longer and longer, and the fresh food compartment drifts up two or three degrees.

Owners describe this as the refrigerator dying. Very often it is the joinery, and the fix costs a fraction of a sealed system repair. We check the grille opening and measure the air coming off the condenser before we quote anything expensive.

Wine columns and the same problem

A wine unit is a refrigeration appliance with narrow tolerances, and it is usually the one furthest from anybody’s attention. A wine column that is holding two degrees warm than its setting will not spoil anything in a week, but it does mean the compressor is running far more than it should, and the cause is the same restricted airflow described above more often than it is a sealed system fault.

If a wine unit has become audible in a room where it used to be silent, that is worth a call. Increased run time is what you are hearing.

Working behind a custom panel

A panel-ready installation changes the mechanics of every visit. The decorative front is carried on the appliance door, not on the cabinet, and it is aligned to its neighbours with adjusters that were set once on installation day. Taking that panel off to reach a hinge, a gasket or a door switch is straightforward; putting it back so the reveals still match the run either side of it is the part that takes care, and it is the reason we allow more time on these calls than on an appliance whose front came with it.

It also changes what a door fault costs. A sagging hinge on a panelled column carries the extra weight of solid joinery, so a hinge that would be a small repair elsewhere is worth correcting early here, before the misalignment starts scuffing a seal or dragging on the cabinet beside it.

When you book, it helps to know whether the front is a custom panel and whether the installer left the original adjustment hardware behind. Both change how we plan the visit.
