## When a built-in is worth repairing, and when it is not

Replacing a built-in means replacing the opening it lives in as often as not. That changes the arithmetic, and it is why the honest answer is rarely a single number.

With a free-standing appliance the repair-or-replace question is close to arithmetic. The repair costs what it costs, a new machine costs what it costs, and the old one leaves on a trolley. A built-in is a different question, because the appliance and the kitchen are one object.

### The cabinet is part of the price

A built-in lives in an opening that was cut for it, and the run of joinery either side was finished to that opening. Replacing the appliance means finding a new one that fits the opening in all three dimensions, matches the way the old one vented, and lands its hinges and its handle where the previous machine left its marks.

Sometimes that is easy. Sometimes the modern equivalent is a fraction different in a direction that matters, and the honest quote for a replacement includes a cabinetmaker. A panelled installation adds another layer, because the decorative front was made for the old door and its fixing pattern is unlikely to be repeated.

None of that argues for repairing everything forever. It argues for knowing the full number on both sides before choosing, which is why we measure the opening as well as the appliance when a repair starts to look marginal.

### What actually decides it

Four things, in roughly this order.

**What failed.** A door seal, a hinge, a switch, a fan, a pump or a control board are all ordinary repairs on an appliance that is otherwise sound. A sealed system fault on a refrigeration appliance is the one that genuinely changes the calculation, because it is the most expensive repair on the machine and the one most sensitive to the appliance’s age.

**How the rest of it looks.** We are inside the machine anyway. Corrosion, a condenser that has been running restricted for years, a cabinet that has been worked on repeatedly, or evidence of water where water should not be all suggest the next fault is not far behind.

**Whether the part exists.** A repair is only a repair if the component can be had. Functional parts usually outlive cosmetic ones by years.

**What else is the same age.** In kitchens where the whole suite went in during one month, the second fault often arrives within a year of the first. That is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to plan the room rather than repair it one item at a time.

### Where we will tell you not to bother

We will say plainly when a repair is a poor investment, and we will put the reasoning in writing so you can weigh it without us in the room. A quote that approaches a meaningful share of a like-for-like replacement, on an appliance old enough that the next failure is a question of when rather than whether, is a repair we would not make on our own kitchen.

The same applies in the other direction. Where a fault is being blamed on the appliance and belongs to the installation — a restricted grille, a duct that never worked, a circuit carrying more than it was drawn for — replacing the appliance solves nothing and costs a great deal. We would rather lose the sale than watch a new machine inherit the same fault.

### The one thing worth doing early

Ask the question before the appliance is dead. A diagnosis on a machine that is still limping gives you options and a timetable. The same diagnosis after a failure gives you a decision to make in a hurry, usually with the contents of the appliance sitting in a cooler on the kitchen floor.

A flat $129 covers the visit and the diagnosis, it is credited toward the repair when you approve the work, and the findings come to you in writing either way.
