## Your ice maker turned out one frozen block: what to check, in the order it goes wrong

Why a built-in ice maker fuses cubes into a slab or freezes over, the safe checks an owner can make on a Thermador freezer column, and the point to stop.

October 10, 2026

When an ice maker delivers a single frozen lump instead of loose cubes, the trouble nearly always traces to one of four causes: ice left too long in a bin that warmed and refroze, a freezer set or running above 0°F, a tired water filter that makes every fill slow and ragged, or a fill valve that lets in more water than the mold can hold. Work through them in that order. The first three take an owner a few minutes with a thermometer and a new cartridge. An overfilling valve, or a mold buried in ice, is the point to hand the job over.

### Cubes welded together in the bin

Cubes that sit for weeks slowly lose moisture at their surfaces and bond wherever they touch, and any brief warm spell softens them enough to fuse. If ice only gets used for guests, empty the bin every week or two.

A bigger lump, or one with a glassy, melted look, means the compartment warmed up. On a Freedom freezer column such as the T24IF905SP or T30IF905SP, the temperature alarm shows the warmest reading the compartment reached; once you have found and fixed the cause, press the confirm button to clear it. A door that was not fully shut sets off its own, separate door alarm, so check the gasket for a bag corner holding it open.

After a summer storm cuts power in Mandarin, throw the fused ice away and let the maker start over. Food in the column may be refrozen if it still holds ice crystals or reads 40°F or lower, though its quality can suffer, and nobody should taste anything to judge whether it is safe.

### Confirm the freezer is actually cold

Thermador recommends 0°F for these columns, and the control accepts anything from -11°F up to +7°F. Eco mode moves the setting to +3°F. Cubes stored at the warm end of that range sit closer to their melting point and cling to their neighbours, so a setting nudged upward, or Eco left on, can be enough by itself. Put an appliance thermometer between frozen packages overnight and compare its reading with the display.

A column that cannot reach its setting often has an airflow problem first. The ventilation openings must never be covered, and Thermador asks owners to vacuum them once a year. Packed dust there makes the column run warm, and the ice shows it first.

### Slow, uneven fills start at the water filter

A clogged cartridge starves the fill. The mold receives only part of its water, cubes come out small or hollow, and the drips that trickle in after the cycle freeze in the fill tube or glue the cubes into a slab. Thermador lists REPLFLTR55, the Freedom Water Filter, for all of its freezer and bottom-freezer models, and the use and care guide says to replace it after 6 months at the latest.

Free the spent cartridge with a counter-clockwise twist, seat the replacement with a clockwise twist to its alignment mark, then reset the filter counter. Discard every cube made in the first 24 hours, since that batch is flushing the fresh cartridge.

### A sheet of ice over the mold or the bin

If the filter is new and the freezer holds 0°F but water still spreads past the mold and freezes into a sheet, the fill valve is probably not closing cleanly, or the column has settled out of level and water runs to one side. Switch the ice maker off, lift out the bin and let the block melt in the sink. Never chip at ice around the mold with a knife, an ice pick or any sharp tool, and keep hair dryers and heaters away; either can crack the liner or warp plastic parts.

### When to stop and book a visit

Call a technician when:

- the mold overfills again with a fresh filter in place
- the fill tube refreezes within a few days of thawing
- water is pooling beneath the column
- the freezer will not pull down to 0°F with clean vents

A visit starts with the $80 diagnostic (see [pricing](https://duvalthermador.com/pricing/)). If the column itself has lost its cooling and the sealed system is at fault, that repair typically falls in the $880–$2,300 range, with the firm figure given once the fault is confirmed. Have the model and serial from the [data plate](https://duvalthermador.com/almanac/parts-model-and-serial/) ready, because they decide which valve or ice maker assembly fits.

If this is your appliance

A flat $80 covers the visit and the diagnosis. It is credited toward the repair when you approve the work.

Before the estimate

### What is this likely to cost?

The visit is a flat **$80** and it comes off the repair once you approve it. What the repair itself lands at depends on the part, and these are the bands the work below has actually fallen into. A band is not a quote: the firm figure is written down after the appliance has been opened and measured.

| Repair | Typical range |
| --- | --- |
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat, credited |
| Igniter, spark module or surface element | $210–$530 |
| Oven thermostat or temperature sensor | $170–$560 |
| Bake or broil element | $200–$570 |
| Convection fan or motor | $250–$660 |

These are the bands that fit this page. [The whole table](https://duvalthermador.com/pricing/) sets out every one of them, alongside how the diagnostic and the estimate work.

The line we work to

### Where the work stops

We work on the built-in appliances inside the kitchen and nothing else. The only duct we open is the one above the cooking surface, from the hood to the wall cap outside — the supply and return ducts that heat and cool the house are a different trade altogether and we are not in it. If the call is about a furnace, an air conditioner, an air handler or a vent in the ceiling, we will say so on the phone and send you elsewhere rather than book a visit.

A call from Mandarin about a Thermador appliance is ours. A call from Mandarin about the furnace, the air conditioning or a vent in the ceiling is not, and we would rather tell you that in thirty seconds on [(904) 201-3304](tel:+19042013304) than on your doorstep.

We service

- Built-in refrigeration
- Wall ovens and steam ovens
- Ranges and rangetops
- Cooktops and induction
- Ventilation hoods
- Dishwashers
- Warming drawers
- Built-in coffee machines
- Wine columns

We do not service

- Furnaces and central heating
- Air conditioners, air handlers and heat pumps
- Supply and return ducts, ceiling vents and registers
- Thermostats and whole-house humidity control
- Water heaters and house plumbing

*A filter left in past its limit slows each fill, and slow fills are where hollow, clumping ice starts.*
